 About the LED Technology

The history of the light sources accompanies people since the ancient times. The natural source of light is the Sun which stimulates all life processes on the Earth. The harnessing of fire by men caused the acceleration of the evolution of the civilisation. As a consequence, new light sources were developed on the turn of the centuries. Presently the phenomenon of light is so common that no-one can imagine life without it. Anyway, the light is still a challenge for designers, scientists and engineers as well as everyone who arranges their apartment.

The latest generation of the light sources are LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). In their case the emitting of light is combined with an effect called electroluminescence, which was discovered at the beginning of the XX century. LEDs belong to the IV generation of the light sources – SSL (Solid State Lighting). The light is generated when voltage is transmitted to a diode and the current flows through it. At the beginning of the 60s of the XX century the production of the first LEDs was started. Presently the LED technology is one of the most advanced and the fastest developing sciences. As a result, year by year, LEDs are characterised with better parameters and their advantages are more and more visible.

LEDIKO takes an active part in changes related to the LED technology and lighting technique. LEDs are a very attractive alternative for traditional light sources – bulbs, fluorescent and gas-discharge lamps because they lack many advantages of the LED lighting.

The most important advantages of the LED lighting systems are:

  • low power consumption,
  • colours from the whole visible spectrum, also RGB,
  • long lifetime,
  • no IR and UV emission,
  • small size,
  • direct light beam,
  • wide range of CCT,
  • safety – low power supply, lack of mercury (Hg),
  • resistance to vibrations and strokes,
  • easy control.

Due to their advantages, LEDs conquer the following lighting areas:

  • general lighting,
  • street lighting,
  • signal and emergency lighting,
  • car lighting,
  • advertisement lighting,
  • decorative and accenting illumination,
  • portable lighting,
  • scene lighting.

LEDs enter new areas of our life due to their universality. New solutions of LEDs applications are being developed – such as chromotherapy tools i.e. curing with colour and light, lighting gadgets, dynamic colour illuminations, etc.

LEDs can successfully compete with bulbs and fluorescent lamps in the lighting market. Theoretically it is possible to produce white LEDs with enormous light efficiency and other very good parameters (e.g. low power consumption, long lifetime, small size). Today the LED technology is one of the most developing areas of science in the world. During the last years there was a rapid growth in quality of LEDs and advanced optics which increased the effectiveness and flexibility of lighting systems. Along with the creativity of designers and engineers, the technology became a source of modern products and spectacular illuminations of the new generation. Today the best white LEDs are ten times more efficient than standard bulbs. We will see the results of these developments in the upcoming years and everything indicates that the future will be full of new revolutionary solutions.

Join LEDIKO and let's together take part in this revolutionary technology.
